What is Scottish Country Dancing?
"What is Scottish Country Dancing?" you might ask. Well, Scottish Country dancing is the traditional social dancing of Scotland. You might think of it as we think of Square Dancing or Line dancing as the traditional dance of the United States. Brought to the United States by Scottish immigrants, it helped form the basis of American traditional dance. Many of the the formations and movements so much a part of square dancing and line dancing are direct descendant of those moves brought from Scotland.
Throughout its history, Scotland has maintained close relationships with both England and France. And the influences of these countries can be found in Scottish Country Dancing - Basic line and formations from English Country dancing and the well-turned steps (the Pas de Basque) & elegance that comes from dancing on the balls of our feet from France. While not performed in true competition as is the Highland dancing style we are all accustomed to seeing, the peformance of Scottish Country Dancing is both energetic and elegant.
